Sissy has been telling me for about two weeks now that there are walnuts down the road. A neighbor has been going with her to collect them. So, today she asked if we could all go and get some for the family. Of course we did and we got more than we bargained for.
Going up the road we found that the walnuts were just about over for this year and then I saw what I thought was a paw-paw tree. I had never seen one before but had read about them and seen pictures or the fruit in catalogs.
We knocked on the door of the house that was on the land with the tree and talked with the owner. He is a very sweet old man and he invited us to gather as many as we could carry. They turned out to be white walnuts and you treat them the same as the wild walnuts that we were looking for.
He also showed us around his fruit orchard and gave us three types of apples and some pears. He also showed us how to get chestnuts out of their green thorny cases. Here is what we brought back today from our walnut hunt.
We will be going back daily to gather more chestnuts, walnuts and white walnuts. All with invitation of course. What a prosperous day!
