Every year around the middle of January I start getting antsy to get out into the garden. Perhaps it has something to do with all those catalogs that I receive in the mail. I have signed up for so many that once they start to come in, it's like a flood.
This past January, I sat down with a binder and made myself a catalog. On each page I attached either the seed package or a catalog clipping for the plants that I have, will or want to use. For the plants that I have grown, I also wrote down what was involved and how it all turned out. I like to rotate my plants and try new plants so now I don't have to try to remember what I did or what turned out well.
Even though I request all those catalogs, I generally don't order from but one or two. I like to see the variety that is available but I don't care for the price of shipping. I only order from organic suppliers and even though the price is higher for a smaller number of seeds per pack, I generally get enough seed harvested to keep for the next spring.
My favorite suppliers are:
Seeds Of Change ( www.seedsofchange.com) these guys have a nice color catalog but their prices are rather high.
Pinetree Garden Seeds (www.superseeds.com) I order most of my seeds from these guys. They have a good selection and good prices.
High Mowing Seeds (www.highmowingseeds.com) they have a great catalog and I plan on ordering from them.
You should have all your spring planting seeds by now. If not, you may not be able to get what you want. I would suggest ordering now for what you want for your late season planting.
I was glad to see that one of our local organic markets has a display for Seeds Of Change. I don't mind the price of the seeds but as I said before, I don't like to pay shipping. I hope that they sell well for the market so that they continue to carry the seeds. It would be really nice if there was so much interest that they also started to sell other distributors seed as well.
